Sleep deprivation and stress can be a vicious cycle. We often have trouble falling sleep because we're worried and anxious, and in turn, the fact that we didn't get enough sleep makes us stressed the next day.

That's where yoga comes in. By lowering stress levels, calming the mind and relieving tension in the body, the soothing practice can be an effective natural sleep remedy. Certain gentle flowing, resting and inversion poses can be particularly helpful for combatting restlessness and insomnia, especially when practiced in the evening or in bed before hitting the hay.

Yoga gets you in touch with the breath. When you slow down and stay in a pose you can feel different areas of the body that are tense and holding on from your day and gradually let that go as you sit and breathe through the pose. Yoga has a calming effect on the nervous system and helps you to really let go of any stress from the day.

Along with gentle flowing and restorative yoga sequence we will practice breathing technique such as Nadi Shodina (alternate nostril breathing), 7 count breath (regulates breathing) and Yoga Nidra (Sleep). In yoga nidra, we consciously take our attention to different parts of the body, which activates the nerves in those areas and helps to integrate the impact of the yoga postures into our system. This is a very soothing restful practice and can really help you to slow down, relax and improve your sleep.

Aromatherapy cannot cure insomnia or its root cause, but using calming and relaxing essential oils before your intended bedtime can potentially help you fall asleep faster and stay asleep until your intended wake-up time. Each week we will diffuse different oils and blends that will aid relaxation and sleep. They will also be used in mini head massages at the end of each class during savanasa.
